Burren - EcoTourism and Geopark

Ecotourism is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people" (The International Ecotourism Society TIES).  Ecotourism focuses on ecologically and socially responsible, nature-based tourism that fosters environmental appreciation and understanding while contributing to the local economy.

We are founder-members of the Burren Ecotourism Network. We are a group of tourism providers in the Burren Region who have worked together over an extended period to obtain independent ecotourism certification and to promote the Burren as a premier international ecotourism destination. We offer visitors opportunities to engage with the protected landscape of the Burren in a manner which is sustainable both in terms of the environment as well as the community.  Tourism businesses within the network are committed to local produce, conservation and the community, as well as to continuing high standards of sustainability, and offer a range of accredited, nature-based experiences.  Our shared vision is that providing genuine ecotourism travel experiences in the Burren will ensure the sustainable development of its communities, environment and heritage.

When visiting us, you can expect to gain privileged insights and knowledge about the nature and culture of the Burren.  You can also be assured that people involved in providing your holiday have adopted environmentally sustainable practices.

ECOTOURISM IRELAND CERTIFICATION

Following an independent audit and assessment of our environmental practices and policies, our 'Goodwill Exchange' obtained Ecotourism Ireland certification in 2011.

Ecotourism Ireland is an organisation set up to stimulate the development of ecotourism in Ireland.  Its label is approved as the national ecotourism label and it acts as an independent certification and standards authority in Ireland.  Core to ecotourism and to the Ecotourism Ireland philosophy is the concept of environmental sustainability and the label has been developed in order to ensure that the environmental impacts of certified ecotourism products are minimised.  The label also encourages proactive nature conservation and the promotion of local cultural values, while at the same time developing local economies and the long term viability of ecotourism destinations.  The Ecotourism Ireland label helps you to find high quality experiences and guarantees a high quality of delivery of services - it reassures you that the holiday and travel experience is the genuine article.

Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark

The Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark is a status for our area – including local businesses and everybody living here – which was initiated by the UNESCO. It is given to areas of outstanding geological formations which influence the lives of all creatures living there.

UNESCO and the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) develop common-sense quality standards and provide a useful structure for cooperation and exchange between Geoparks around the world. This is especially useful for regions that combine the preservation of their natural landscape into effective ways of achieving strong local economic development, usually through nature-friendly tourism. The status will be revised in four years' time to assess the involvement of and benefit for the local community.

Environmental Action Plan 2014

for the ROADSIDE TAVERN/BURREN BREWERY/KIERANS KITCHEN

PETER CURTIN, THE OWNER/OPERATOR OF THE ABOVE PREMISES, IS A COMMITTED MEMBER OF THE BURREN, CLIFFS OF MOHER GEOPARK PROJECT. I HAVE BEEN CAMPAINING FOR SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS PRACTICE FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS.

WASTE MANAGEMENT. WE HAVE INTRODUCED COMPOSTABLE BIN COLLECTION WHICH WILL REDUCE WASTE TO LAND FILL BY 10%, IE. 512KG ANNUALLY. WE ALSO INTRODUCED CLEAR PLASTIC REFUSE SACKS SO AS TO OBSERVE FOOD WASTE BEFORE PUTTING TOWARDS THE BIN COLLECTION.

ELECTRICITY MANAGEMENT. IN JULY THIS YEAR 2014 WE WILL CHANGE ALL 77 LIGHT BULBS FROM  30CFLS @11WATTS AND 47 REGULAR @ 100WATTS = 5000WATTS TO 77 LED @3.5WATTS REDUCING LIGHTING WATTAGE TO 5.4% OF 2013. IN 2015, WE WILL REPLACE 3 HAND DRYERS TO MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT HAND DRYERS IN THE PUBLIC TOILETS. TO ACCURATLY MEASURE ELECTRICITY USAGE WE WILL SUBMETER THE KITCHEN AREA IN 2014 AND THE BREWERY AREA IN 2015.

CARBON FOOTPRINT. I HAVE PLANTED 3000 TREES A MIX OF DECIDUOUS AND EVERGREEN TO OFFSET SOME OF OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT.

WATER USAGE. LISDOONVARNA IS A SPA TOWN AND WE HAVE AN ONSITE SOURCE OF GROUND WATER. 20LTRS PER MINUTE THAT WE WILL HARVEST IN 2015 AND USE FOR ALL NONPOTABLE USES (EXCEPT THE FOOD PRODUCTION). THIS WILL OFFSET OUR WATER REQUIREMENTS AS OUR BUSINESS GROWS.
STAFF TRAINING. WE REGULARLY TRAIN STAFF ON THE NECESSITY TO FOLLOW CORRECT  PROCEDURE ON WASTE MANAGEMENT.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT, HEATING AND HOT WATER SUPPLY. THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND DIFFICULT  AREA FOR US TO IMPROVE. WE WOULD LIKE TO CONVERT OUR ENERGY REQUIREMENT BY USING A WOOD FIRED BOILER, AS THIS IS A RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE. HERE IN CO. CLARE WE HAVE 300YRS SUPPLY. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL WE WOULD LIKE TO JOIN WILL OTHER MEMBERS OF THE GEOPARK IN SUBMITTING A COMMUNITY PLAN TO THE SAEI AGENCY FOR GRANT AID TOWARDS INSTALLATION. THIS WOULD ALLOW US TO REMOVE THE USE OF OIL/SMOKELESS COAL/BRIQUETTES SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT.

GREEN PURCHASING. TO DATE WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND COST EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVES TO OUR CURRENT SUPPLIERS OF CLEANING AND SANITISING MATERIALS BUT WERE  WORKING ON THAT PROBLEM WITH CATER CARE LTD PRESENTLY.
